Generally the waiting period for maternity insurance is between 10 and 12 months. This means that the insurance company will not pay for any maternity costs until that period has finished. Please note that, you can become pregnant within the waiting period, just any of your pregnancy within the period you will pay out of pocket and the remaining months and delivery out of the waiting period the insurance company will pay. Basically, the later you become pregnant the more the insurance company will pay.
Routine maternity encompasses all ‘normal’ pregnancy treatment such as checkups, ultra scans and a normal delivery. Each insurance company provides extra benefit for complications of pregnancy and complications of delivery (C-Section) As this is when the cost of treatment can become astronomical.
Newborn cover is another important factor, this will cover your baby when born under your policy until you have had time to add the baby to your policy. Again this varies with each company but generally newborn cover encompasses all treatment required while in hospital for up to 30 days
In the UAE, BUPA are the most widely recognized by hospitals and Doctors for their maternity plans plus their waiting period is 10 months. Integra are popular as they offer good maternity cover, family discounts and have direct billing for outpatient treatment in the UAE.
