5 Great Healthy Food Blogs in the UAE
Posted on Jul 09, 2013 by Samantha Lancaster (G+)
The UAE enjoys a vibrant foodie scene and is host to a thriving community of talented bloggers. In the wake of concerns over the region’s expanding waistlines, we check out five of the best healthy food blogs to follow:
1. My Custard Pie
‘Honest food, fresh ingredients and a slice of life in Dubai’
Sally’s blog sets the standard for what a food blog should be; visually appealing, with a fresh layout, professional standard photography and engaging, intelligent copy that draws you in and makes you drool. It’s a slick and stylish effort, with a lightness of touch that makes you want to eat, drink and be merry without overdoing it.
With a love of all things fresh and organic, and a vegetarian teenage daughter to please, Sally has plenty of healthy recipes and tips (and a few self indulgent ones too) and likes nothing more than an unfussy local bistro “with a limited menu taken from fresh, local ingredients. Nothing fancy, focus on the taste (and good company)”.
There are handy drop-down food categories and past posts can be sorted by month. There’s also a search box for more specific searches making this a user-friendly site and easy to navigate. Voted one of The Independent UK’s ’50 best food websites’ and one of the National’s ‘UAE’s best food blogs’.

2. Chef and Steward
“Healthy food can be tasty and tasty food can healthy. Food should be used as medicine but that doesn’t mean it ought to taste like it”
Another fantastic, professional looking site run by a ‘foodie power couple’ husband and wife team; Chef Lij (Five star head chef at some of the UAE’s most prestigious hotels) and his wife Kari (food, travel & lifestyle photographer, writer and filmmaker).
They dish up a range of healthy recipes and ideas, from low carb meals to diabetic friendly options and all beautifully photographed. These guys like to have fun and their joyful approach to food and life is evident in every meticulously shot and concisely written post. The layout is clean and elegant and easy to navigate.

3. Gluten Free UAE
“We are who you want us to be, a support group, an information source, a shoulder to lean on and a restaurant directory”
An essential resource for all things gluten free in the UAE that is so much more than a blog; with information and support for those with gluten intolerance or Celiac disease and plenty of delicious recipe ideas and reviews. Clean and minimal, with nice photography, the site is easy to navigate with clear categories and a search box function.
Popular Page: the ‘Your Stories’ section details ‘real life’ stories of people of all ages and nationalities living with Gluten intolerance in the UAE.
4. Swati Bansal Rao
“Good food and the aesthetics around it is my passion which I want to share with my readers and learn from them in turn”
A resident of Dubai, via India, Swati packed in the corporate day job to follow her passions of travel, food and photography. The result is this inspirational and stylish blog with beautiful imagery and an intimate, chatty writing style.
There are plenty of healthy recipes, including gluten free options, while the elegant layout allows the seductive photographs to pop off the page, and make you want to try them out immediately. The travel section provides a fascinating backdrop to the food and recipes and, of course, is accompanied by Swati’s delightful photography.

5. Total Salads
“I have read a lot about nutrition and I have also read a lot of cookbooks and blogs. I know when something tastes good and when it’s good for me, and those are the recipes that I am posting”
Erum is an extensively travelled resident of Dubai and began the blog as part of a quest to eat more healthily. The result is absolutely choc full of recipes, tutorials, tips and nutritional information relating to everything salad and fruit oriented. It’s anything but same-y and the layout and navigation makes is super easy to find your way around too. An essential bookmark.
