If you’re looking to shed a few pounds or get back into a fitness routine in the new year, you are definitely not alone. This is one of the most commonly made New Year’s resolutions, which puts fitness and health in the forefront of many minds at the beginning of the year. But the crowded gyms in January are often desolate come March. Only about 8 percent of people keep the New Year’s resolutions they make on December 31. One way to stick to a resolution is by planning out specific milestones to aspire to throughout the year. Setting smaller goals is a good idea because they are easier to achieve: rather than aiming for one gigantic goal. Additionally, by setting milestones that are spaced throughout the year, it will be harder to give up after you’ve already committed.

Most cities cater to this thirst for health and wellness and Dubai is no different, offering ample events and opportunities for locals to expand their fitness knowledge, shrink their waistlines, and just get inspired. Decide what you want to achieve in your fitness in 2014 and check out what is going on in the city in the upcoming year. Try to commit to and schedule a few events or milestones throughout the year. Knowing a certain race or class is coming up in a month will help you stay motivated. Here are some ideas to get you started on the first six months of your healthy year in Dubai, month by month!

January - The Weight Loss Show

On January 17 and 18, the Weight Loss Show comes to the Dubai International Marine Club. This expo is a great way to kick off the new year with all kinds of healthy ideas (and if saving money is another of your resolutions, you’re in luck because the event is free to boot). There are tons of opportunities at the event for inspiration – information about healthy eating, product booths, speakers, lots of free fitness classes to participate in, and even opportunities for kids to get involved and learn healthy habits from a young age. For a free event, it’s definitely worth a stop for all the information it can provide.

February - The Dubai Tour

From February 5 through 8, the Dubai Tour bicycle race comes to town. It has four unique stages of participation all across the city, starting downtown near the Burj Khalifa, at the Nad Al Sheba cycle track, across the Palm Jumeirah, and finally through the old streets of Dubai. Cyclists can go to http://www.dubaitour.com to get more information and register. Even if the intense cycling isn’t for you, just observing these athletes competing at their best is enough to get anyone back in the exercise saddle.

March - The Outdoor Design, Build, and Supply Show

How does an outdoor design show relate to health and fitness, you may ask? Depending on the type of work, a 150-pound person can burn around 300 calories or more during an hour of yard work. At the outdoor design show, running March 31 through April 2, get inspired to beautify the yard, add playground equipment (another calorie burner!), and pay more attention to the aesthetics of the outdoor side of your home, giving the whole family a reason to spend more time outside and less time in front of the TV and snack cabinet.

April - World Tai Chi & Qigong Day

Celebrate this event on April 27 at the Dubai Police Stadium and learn about the health benefits of these two ancient Chinese arts that are said to balance the Ying and Yang, or positive and negative, energies in the body. The whole family can experience the health benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong – increased flexibility, improved muscle strength and increased stamina, among many others. Learning these skills can positively affect fitness activities and many other aspects of the family’s lives.

May - Try a Tribe Fit Fitness Class

When the hot summer temperatures start creeping in, there is no shame in taking the fitness indoors. Summer is a perfect time to check out a new class in the air conditioning. Tribe Fit has a ton of group fitness classes and the atmosphere encourages meeting classmates and social interaction after class. Take a class to learn a new skill and challenge your workout routine while meeting like-minded fitness friends too! Classes range from cycling to dance to yoga and have lots of variety.

June - Dubai Desert Road Run

For newbies and pros alike, all levels can participate in the Dubai Desert Road Run on June 13 at the Sevens Stadium. Occurring multiple times throughout the year to help runners work toward improving their times, the road run has a 10k race at 6 a.m. and a 3k fun run at 7:30 a.m., early enough to beat the worst of the harsh summer heat. Running a 10k halfway through the year is a great goal to keep inspired in the first half of the year.

Don’t let the hot summer months get you down, as in down on the couch. There are plenty of indoor gyms, classes and activities, as well as the early morning and late night hours to get in a work out. As the weather cools off, expect fitness opportunities to pick up again as Dubai residents relish the weather. Whatever you do, working to continue or establish a healthy routine early in the year, before the challenging summer months, will benefit you all year long. Come next December 31 you’ll be glad you did!
