Top 5 Fun, Family-Friendly Events in the UAE for May
Posted on May 12, 2014 by Mike Peterson
Looking for a fun way to get summer started in Dubai or Abu Dhabi? Here are our top picks for the best family-friendly events in May.
From contemporary art exhibits to concerts featuring Grammy-winning musicians; from international cricket matches to inflatable water parks: there is tons to do in the UAE in the coming month. But, if you are looking for a fun and healthy day or weekend out for the entire family, here is our take on some of the best family-friendly events going on in May.
Aqua Fun Floating Water Park, Corniche Park, Abu Dhabi – Until July 31st
Already in full swing, Aqua Fun will appeal to the young of all ages. While it may sound like yet another shoots-and-tubes splash park, in reality Aqua Fun is more of a sports and climbing/terrain park – with a twist. There are team-based games, slides, a massive obstacle course, a Velcro wall, sumo-suit wrestling, and more. And, of course, most attractions offer the chance to get a little cool off in the water, so a swimsuit is a must -- but this is not just another day in the pool. Interested? “Your Planet Needs You” Environmental Exhibit, Children’s City, Dubai – April 10th to August 10th
There is no better time to help kids understand our planet, and how our actions today have consequences tomorrow. To make this lesson easier to grasp for youngsters, Children’s City is hosting an interactive exhibition that demonstrates what Dubai will probably look like in 2050. And while it is clearly geared toward a younger crowd, grown-ups will likely find the exhibit interesting as well. Visit the exhibit’s dedicated site to give the kids a preview of what is on display, and then click here for the grown-up stuff like ticket prices and operating hours.
Jeff Dunham, Live Comedy at the Du Forum, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi – May 1st and 2nd
American comedian and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham is performing two shows at the Du Forum in early May as part of his 2014 world tour. While some comics are anything but family or kid-friendly, Dunham tends to steer away from most of the blue material and keeps the profanity in check. Some jokes will still be lost on younger kids, but will be a treat for the adults in the room. Nevertheless, the puppets should make up for it. Click here for details and ticket info.
GIANT Bicycles Tour Dubike Cycling Festival, Dubai Camel Racing Track, Dubai – May 2nd
Hardcore road bike enthusiasts have no doubt already registered, but even casual riders are invited, and the event is a great way to introduce a child or friend to riding. Unlike many bicycle tours, the Dubike Cycling Festival will feature rides that range from ultra-beginner all the way up to pro-level, with plenty of options in between. The shortest rides are just 2 and 5 km for the kids, all inside the racetrack grounds, while other rides range from 20, 50, 100 and 160 kms and include park, road, and even desert riding portions. Just be sure to register soon, because all riders must enroll by April 30th. Visit Premier Online for complete details and registration requirements.
Movies In The Garden, Wafi Pyramids Rooftop Gardens, Dubai – May 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th
Wrapping up their spring outdoor movies at the end of May, there are still several showings left, so take the family to Wafi Pyramids for an outdoor movie starting every Sunday evening at 8:30 p.m. Be sure to arrive a few minutes early to grab the perfect spot, and then chill out on your jumbo beanbag to enjoy the flick. The best part is it’s all free, though you can buy drinks and snacks on-site. No reservations are necessary, but be sure check out the event website for film listings.
And there you have it, several ways to kick off the summer in style. All you have to do is decide which event is perfect for your family and then plan the day. Don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids and cover up during the heat of the afternoon, since May is already getting pretty hot.
