Considering Moving to the United Arab Emirates to teach?

Everything you needed to know about teachers insurance

Teaching overseas can be an incredibly rewarding experience and with the excellent salaries and benefit plans on offer, many educators are flocking to Dubai to teach. It always makes sense however, to check that you are appropriately insured in case disaster strikes. We take a look at teachers insurance to see what it really means to anyone looking to teach in the UAE and beyond.

With year round sunshine, excellent salary packages and a broad range of unique travel opportunities, it’s easy to see why the United Arab Emirates has become such a sought-after destination for English teachers looking to work abroad. The wealth of opportunities for teachers to apply their trade at public schools, private international schools, language centres and vocational schools and colleges combined with a strong regional focus on developing English language skills has led to an influx of teachers from around the globe.

But for any teachers considering moving to the UAE (or anywhere else abroad for that matter) there are a number of considerations. One of the most important is knowing that your health needs are taken care of in the event that disaster strikes. UMI has a range of tailored solutions designed specifically for people in the education industry who are interested in working overseas, with coverage focused on what is really important to people in this industry. We run through some of the most-asked questions in regards to teachers insurance and what you need to know before taking out any policy.

What is teacher’s insurance?

Put quite simply, teacher’s insurance is specifically designed to meet the health insurance needs of educators working overseas. Expatriates working abroad have particular health care needs and a teachers health insurance plan is designed to take the stress and worry out of maintaining your health care whilst in another country. With differences in customs, local language, traditions and surroundings, it’s comforting to know that your medical needs are one thing you don’t need to worry about.

Will a teachers insurance policy keep my family protected as well?

Yes. UMI teachers insurance plans are designed to keep individuals and their families covered in the event of an accident or emergency. In fact, your policy will even pay for the expense of having your dependents accompany you in case you need a medical evacuation for life saving treatment.

Is teachers insurance more expensive than comparable plans?

Often, the premium rates for teachers health insurance are lower than for equivalent plans, and are offered for less money than you’d pay for a regular insurance plan.

Will I be covered with my plan if I need to move country?

Your teachers insurance policy covers you anywhere in the world, and unlike other traditional travel insurance plans, will not be invalidated if you return to your home county. It provides the peace of mind of knowing that, no matter where you are, you are protected by world class coverage. In addition, add-on plans can cover you for up to 180 days at a time during personal vacations.

If I have existing conditions, will I be covered?

No matter what your pre-existing medical conditions, UMI’s team of professional consultants can assist you with a plan that will suit your needs. Click here for more information.

Do you have a no-claims discount?

There are discounts of up to 25 percent on your policy if you don’t make any claims against your health insurance. After every year, you’ll be rewarded with a no-claims discount on the following year’s premium up to 25 percent.

What am I covered for?

UMI has a range of insurance policies available that provide cover based on your specific needs and how much protection you require. There are three levels of coverage and the benefits which are typically included in a UAE teachers health insurance plan include:

  • Maternity Coverage

  • Outpatient treatment

  • Inpatient treatment

  • Dental services

  • Routine vaccinations

  • Chronic conditions

This is by no means an exhaustive list of all the benefits afforded. For further information on plans, click here

How much would a hospital visit cost in Dubai without insurance?

UAE hospital care is of a very high standard and the quality of physicians and services is likely to match what you’d expect in a Western facility. The cost, however, can be quite high, with a mere consultation often costing around US$120. Once you add in any medication required or other diagnostic procedures like ultrasounds, X-Rays or MRIs, these costs can quickly skyrocket.

Are there certain hospitals and facilities I can or can’t use?

Unlike some other insurance policies, UMI teachers insurance does not place restrictions on where you can receive treatment. As long as your clinic is within the area of cover you have selected, you’re free to use any facilities within it.
